History

The diocese was erected on December 5, 1983, detaching the district of Karbi Anglong of Assam from the Archdiocese of Shillong- Guwahati and the district of North Kachar Hills from the Diocese of Silchar. Bp Mathai Kochuparampil sdb, was appointed as the First Bishop of the diocese. He was installed at Diphu on March 4, 1984. He died on March 4, 1992. Rev. Fr Albano D'Mello was elected as the Diocesan Administrator on March 11, 1992. On June 24, 1994 Bp John Thomas Kattrukudiyil was appointed the second Bishop of Diphu. He was consecrated and installed at Diphu on September 8, 1994.
