The
N.V.S.C. was established on August 1, 1969 in the Divine Word
Seminary at Pune as per the mandate of the "Church in India"
Seminar held at Bangalore. When the Centre was established in
1969, its aim was to help those involved in the Vocation Ministry.
It was given the task of "inspiring", "Assisting"
and "Co-ordinating" the vocational activities in India,
at all levels. The emphasis was on priestly vocations and vocations
to the consecrated lives.
N.V.S.C.
– Institute of Spirituality and Counselling Psychology gives
a new validation to its principal visionary dimensions of Vocation
and Formation by offering residential programmes: One year Diploma
in Pastoral Counselling and Religious Formation, and the two-year
Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology.
The academic year of 2001-2002 was inaugurated on 9th July 2001
with the celebration of Holy mass. Very Rev. Fr. Lourdes Daniel,
Vicar General of the Diocese of Pune was the main celebrant. The
fourth batch of 35 participants, including 3 from Sri Lanka and
one from S. Korea (18 Sisters, 15 Priests and 2 Brothers) for
the one year Diploma Course were welcomed and wished God’s
blessings by Fr. Lawrence Pinto, the Director of NVSC.
The excellence of the Diploma courses has been widely recognized;
one of such indicators is that the Postgraduate Diploma course
seems to be commensurate with M.A. level psychology-education
of the U.S., the Programme which is now approved by the Department
of Psychology, Fordham University, New York, USA. The present
one-year programme, and its second year, will make the participants
eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology.
The first year programme offers courses in the area of Spirituality
and Theology: the Current Trends in Christology, the Prophets,
Theology of the Priesthood and the Religious Life, Indian Spirituality,
Spiritual Direction and Vipassana; in the field of Psychology,
the content is the study of Personality, Psychopathology, Psychotherapeutic
Approaches and its integration with spirituality of the Priests
and Religious.
The second year Diploma will involve Psychological testing and
evaluation, Psychotherapy, Neuropsychology, Behavioural Medicine,
Psychopathology, Group Therapy and Family Therapy.
Besides the long term courses, it is also scheduled to offer two
short term courses on Self-Awareness for Personal Growth, and
two on Spiritual Direction & Counselling for Pastors and Formators.
The duration of the short-term courses is one month.
Two more staff members, namely, Fr. Philip Thomas MSFS and Fr.
Gnanadhas from the Dioceses of Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu, have joined
the resident cum academic staff. There are now eight members on
the staff at N.V.S.C.
The courses conducted at N.V.S.C. are enlightened and inviting
to the Priests and Religious and to all those who are engaged
in the ministry of Formation and Pastoral Counselling.
Activities
during October - December 2004:
Inaugural
Day of the Academic Year 2004-2005
On
June 30, 2004 the participants of the Diploma Program in Pastoral
Counselling and Religious Formation had an inaugural Eucharistic
Celebration. Towards Fullness Of Life was chosen as the theme
for the entire year 2004-2005. The main Celebrant Fr. Philip Thomas
Administrator shared the vision and the mission we have to focus
during this year. We should search for the right thing at a right
place; we must make sure that we have untied ourselves as we use
our energy to move forward and have a right attitude to embark
on a journey towards fullness of life.
The
highlight to the liturgical celebration was a symbolic rite held
before the beginning of the celebration of the Eucharist. Every
Participant brought along a bowl of water and poured in the central
container in the sanctuary signifying that we have brought and
pour ourselves at the feet of the lord to renew and make us new
as we move towards fullness of life.
Welcome
ceremony to Fr. Joe Mathias S. J. & Farewell to Fr. Lawrence
Pinto.
On
August 07, 2004, a joy filled atmosphere prevailed to welcome
Fr. Joe Mathias as the new Director of the NVSC at the same time
there arose in the participants and the staff a deep sense of
gratitude to Fr. Lawrence Pinto who had toiled for seven years
to polish and keep NVSC shining to compete with international
standards.
In
his message Fr. Lawrence Pinto shared his contentment and struggles
in cradling NVSC to the present status. He expressed that the
mandate to carry this gigantic task has fallen into right person’
hands.
Institute
Day - A Day to Celebrate and Remember
The
long awaited day dawned on November 20, 2004 when the NVSC family
gathered around the altar for a Thanksgiving Eucharistic Celebration.
The theme ‘Let Your Light Shine’ was well spelled
out in a meaningful Eucharistic celebration. The key message from
the Main Celebrant, Fr. Joe Mathias S.J. (Director) was that the
enlightenment transforms persons into visionaries, who tirelessly
work for a civilization of love based on the culture of life.
In
his address during the cultural evening, the Director shared the
twin purpose of the celebration. Firstly, to express our gratefulness
and appreciation for the persons involved in shouldering the burden
of maintenance, growth and progress of NVSC. Secondly, it has
a formative value for the participants in working collectively
to respond to the challenges of effective leadership in India
and Asia.
There
are 26 trainees (3 Diocesan Priests, 7 Religious Priests and 2
Religious Brothers and 14 Sisters) presently undergoing one-year
diploma program in Pastoral Counselling and Religious Formation.
In September-October 2004, 35 priests, religious men and women
participated in one-month course on Psycho-Spiritual Growth Approach
to Pastoral and Formation Ministry.
The
one-month Course on ‘Self Awareness for Personal Growth’
held in November-December 2004 was attended by 35 participants
and 27 are presently undergoing the same course for one month.
The participants are mostly from South Asian Countries and a few
from Africa.
Humble
beginning, facing struggles and setting new paradigms, NVSC has
become a beacon of hope that enriches the life of the church in
Asia and Africa. NVSC will enable you to embark on a journey as
pilgrims, initiating you into psycho-spirituality making an effective
difference… as Jesus did!
