Nun And A Maid Die Of Electrocution In Tura
SHILLONG,

Sister
Shanti UMI, working at Mronggre, West Garo hills in the Diocese
of Tura, Meghalaya was electrocuted at 12.45 pm on March 15, 2008.
Apparently,
due to strong wind, high tension cable broke and fell on the cable
connection of the convent leading to a fire back in the convent.
Seeing
the fire in the convent, Sr. Shanti along with a maid servant
Pallavi Soreng went to switch off the refrigerator and both of
them got electric shock and died on the spot.
Sister
Shanti’s body was brought to Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh on March
17.
The
Bishop of Allahabad Isidore Fernandes, with fifteen concelebrants
celebrated the Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church, Kanpur 8
March with church full of religious sisters and laity.
Sr.
Shanti was born in Irinjalakuda, Thrissur District on 2 May 1949
as the first child of George Mary and late Antony Francis Alangaden.
She has 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
After
completing her high school studies, with a great desire to be
a missionary, she joined the Ursulines of Mary Immaculate on 28th
June 1970 at Cannanore. She was professed on 3rd December 1973
and made her final profession on 24th April 1979.
During
her junior years she qualified herself as a trained teacher and
she has formed many young hearts directing them to the path of
Gospel values.
Her
mission extended to different places, like Mangalore (Mangalore
diocese), Renukoot, Mariampur, Obra, Chakeri (all Allahabad Diocese),
Jaunpur, Sikanderpur(Varanasi), Bazpur, Kathgodam, Bhowali (Bareily
), Palia ( Lucknow Diocese) and the last 2 years of her life was
spend in dedicated service at the Mission Station Mronggre, Meghalaya.
She had been loved and appreciated by all those who came in contact
with her.
Her
simplicity, humility, cheerfulness and generous service enriched
and inspired many whose lives she had touched. Her availability
in carrying out the various apostolic works of the Institute can
never be forgotten.
She
had a special love for the poor and those in trouble. Her simple
life style, spirit of poverty, hard work and readiness to do God's
will in everything and everywhere were remarkable and will remain
an inspiration for others.
