Abp Quevedo Re-elected As FABC Secretary General

BANGKOK, APR. 25, 2008, 09.20 Hrs (CBCI News/FABC):

Archbishop Orlando Quevedo was re-elected for another three-year term as secretary general of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conference (FABC).

Archbishop Quevedo is the metropolitan Archbishop of Cotabato, Philippines and has been the President of the Philippines Conference for two terms.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said Thursday that Quevedo was elected at the FABC central committee's meeting in Bangkok last April 16 to 19.

The committee also extended the term of the assistant secretary general, Fr. Raymond O'Toole, for another four-year term.

The Federation is composed of 15 Bishops' Conferences and 10 associate members. The latest to join was the Bishops' Conference of Kasakhstan (Central Asia).

The associate members are Church territories with less than three dioceses or ecclesiastical territories from the Asian continent.

During the three-day meeting held in Bangkok, the different offices reported about their activities and programs.

The Central Committee also discussed about the structure and activities of the Federation.

Planning for the upcoming General Assembly of the FABC, the highest decision making body of the Federation, was another important discussion point.

This assembly will be held in Bangalore with the theme "Living the Eucharist in Asia."

General Assemblies of the Federation take place every four years. In between, the Central Committee serves as the governing body of the Federation.
