Assam Chief Minister Hosts Dinner for Bishops, Lauds Christian

Chief Minister Mr.Tarun Gogoi hosted a dinner in honour of the
Catholic Bishops of India during their 29th General Body Meeting
being held in the Assam capital and gateway to Northeast India,
28 February.
Speaking
at the conclusion of a cultural parade, Mr. Gogoi said the Christian
missionaries have made outstanding contribution to the people
of the region. He commended the distinct contribution of Christian
missionaries and institutions in the field of education, health
care and development with its primary focus on the poor and
downtrodden. He noted with satisfaction the efforts of the community
in creating entrepreneurship and employment skills in the youth.
The chief
minister sought the prayers and blessings of the bishops for
peace in the region. The people of the region are peace loving,
though the perception outside is that the region is a troubled
and disturbed place, and some people are even afraid to visit
the Northeast, he pointed out. Speaking of the youth of the
region, Shri Gogoi, said “our youth are very resourceful
and talented, and we are proud of our youth”, drawing
thunderous applause from the hundreds of youth who had come
from the seven states.
Archbishop
Memanparampil who welcomed the chief minister to the event,
thanked him for his hospitality and for hoisting a dinner in
honour of the bishops. He also thanked him for the support and
collaboration his government has been extending to the Christian
community in its service to the people.
