Ahmedabad Celebrates Mother Teresa’s Birth Centenary

AHMEDABAD, Gujarat, Aug. 30, 2010, 10:05 Hrs (SAR NEWS):

Several programmes marked the birth centenary of Mother Teresa in Ahmedabad, August 26. The day began with prayer services in the three houses of the Missionaries of Charity in the city, which house several inmates, including dying destitute and orphans.

Feeding programmes for the poor and children from the slums were organised from each of these centres.

The highlight of the day, however, was a public homage to Mother Teresa, when several citizens gathered at Mother Teresa Chowk in the heart of the city. Prayers and floral tributes were offered to Mother Teresa.

Bishop Thomas Macwan of Ahmedabad, Jesuit Provincial of Gujarat, Father Jose Changanacherry, and director of human rights organisation Prashant, Jesuit Father Cedric Prakash were present among other eminent citizens and municipal officials.

A series of programmes to celebrate the Mother Teresa centenary have been organised in the city which include a public programme on September 5 and an International Film Festival later in September.
