v 30th CBCI General Body Meeting 2012

The 30th General Body Meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) is scheduled to be held between 1-8 February, 2012 at St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore. The theme for the meeting is “The Church’s Role for a Better India”.

The General Body Meeting of the CBCI is held once in two years. At every General
Body Meeting, a particular theme of relevance to the Church and nation is discussed
by the leaders of the Church. The Regional Bishops Councils, National Commissions, National Institutes and the Catholic Religious of India present reports on their activities and major thrusts during the General Body meting.

 

v New Appointments

Fr. Franklin Phillip D’Souza from the Diocese of Shimoga has been appointed Secretary of the CBCI Office for Youth. He succeeds Fr. Alwyn D’Souza.

Fr. Vincent Chinnadurai from the Diocese of Chingleput has been appointed Secretary of the CBCI Office for Laity. Mr. Edward Edezhath, Joint Secretary of the Office for Laity
was confirmed for a five- year term.

Sr. Teresa Joseph, FMA, has been appointed Secretary of the CBCI Office for Dialogue
and Desk for Ecumenism. She succeeds Fr. M. D. Thomas, MST.

Seeking to reach out to Christians, the BJP Government in Karnataka on Thursday decided to spend Rs 50 crore for various schemes to benefit the development of the minority community. As many as Rs 15 crore will be earmarked for the development of Churches, while another Rs 35 crore for construction of community halls and financial help to the poor students and skill building among Christians. v Caritas Elects New Secretary-General

v Bishop George Alencherry elected Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church

Pope Benedict XVI has confirmed the election of Bishop George Alencherry as Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church. Archbishop Alencherry was canonically elected by the Synod of the Syro-Malabar Church.

Bishop George Alencherry was born on 19 April 1945 at Thuruthy in Kottayam District. He was ordained a priest on 18 December 1972. He was appointed bishop of Thuckalay on 2 February 1997 and was installed on the same day.

He has served as the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry, and is currently the Secretary of the Syro-Malabar Synod and the chairman of Synodal Commission for Catechesis.

The news of the election of Bishop Alencherry as Major Archbishop was made public in Rome and Kochi on May 26.

A five-day regional Art Camp was held at Le Reve Art Residency, Trichur, May 16-20. The camp had as its theme: Mother Teresa, Communicator of Campassion. The Regional Art Camp is part of the yearlong celebration of the first birth centenary of Blessed Mother Teresa. A national art camp was held in Kolkata in February 2011. The Trichur Camp was attended by 8 leading artists from South India and 25 students interested in art from Trichur. v Central government to intervene against communal violence across the nation

India’s central government will be able to intervene in cases of communal violence, or attacks against specific social or ethnic groups, by invoking Article 355 of the Indian Constitution, if the Communal Violence bill, drafted by the National Advisory Council (NAC) chaired by Sonia Gandhi, is adopted by parliament. The new bill would allow the federal govern to declare a state of “internal disturbance” in cases of communal violence and act accordingly based on the situation and the circumstances without waiting for state authorities. According to Article 355, "It shall be the duty of the Union to protect every state against external aggression and internal disturbance and ensure the government of every state is carried on in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.".............More
