The
Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (C.B.C.I.)
is the permanent association of the Catholic Bishops of
India. It was formally constituted in September 1944 at
the Conference of Metropolitans held in Madras. Its objectives
are to facilitate coordinated study and discussion of questions affecting
the Church, and adoption of a common policy and effective
action in all matters concerning the interests of the
Church in India.
General
Body
The
C.B.C.I. has now 212 members of whom 38 are honorary members.
The 159 members with voting right consisting of 30 Archbishop
- Metropolitans (including one Archbishop-Patriarch), 125
Diocesan Bishops, 1 Co - adjutor Archbishop, 2 Co - adjutor
Bishops, 12 Auxiliary Bishops and 3 Diocesan Administrators.
The members meet for Ordinary General Meetings once in every
two years, while Extra-ordinary Meetings are held according
to need.
At
the General Meetings the C.B.C.I. reviews the situation
of the Church in India and takes appropriate decision on
future plans and actions that are called for. These meetings
also consider the annual reports presented by the Secretary
General and by the various Commissions.
The
C.B.C.I. Centre
The
C.B.C.I. Centre in New Delhi is the headquarters of the
Catholic Bishops' Conference of India and was started in
1962. It is headed by the Deputy Secretary General.
Besides
the C.B.C.I. Secretariat the Centre houses the offices of
some of the C.B.C.I. Commissions which are manned by the
Executive Secretaries. These Commissions / Departments take
care of the respective services such as Youth, Health Care,
Media etc. CARITAS India, the Social and developmental wing
of the C.B.C.I. also has it's headquarters at the Centre.
